“I want you to swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.” (Genesis 24:3-4)

Let God Decide Your Love Story

People from all walks of life have their own love stories to tell. Some of them would tell of a love story that began at love at first sight while others would tell of one that began in friendship. However, the Bible tells us of a different love story that started with obedience to God and prayer.

In Genesis 24, we could read of how Abraham obeyed the Lord by deciding not to let his son, Isaac, to have a Canaanite woman as his wife. This decision involved great faith as Abraham had to send his servant to a far country in order to choose a wife for Isaac. The servant obeyed and when he arrived near Nahor, he prayed that God would bring the right girl and as a sign would give him a drink and offer to water his camels, too. Even before he finished praying, Rebekah came and gave him a drink and also offered to water his camels. When Rebekah’s father and brother heard of this story, they said,

“This is from the Lord; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah, take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has directed” (Genesis 24:50-51)

Because true love is not just based on emotions, it is necessary to develop a love story built with obedience to God and prayer. Even when it comes to Christian online dating, you should never choose to date someone using only your eyes nor your emotions. Although there is always the tendency to be easily attracted to someone who has an interesting profile and attractive picture on the internet, it is always better to date someone – even online – based on God’s will.

Love that is based on just your emotions has the tendency to change when the other person does something you don’t like. On the other hand, love that is based on God’s will coupled with our willingness to love the other person despite certain circumstances is the kind of love that lasts. One of the prerequisites of having the kind of romance that God has for you is to let God decide whom you should or should not date – even when it is online dating.

Lord, I know that You have a wonderful love story in store for me. I am allowing You to decide whom I should or should not date. Help me to be always obedient to You and to Your plan for my love life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
